The Collaborator – by Martin Donovan
In the 90’s I had a friend who must have been the world’s biggest Hal Hartley fan. Since you can’t say Hal Hartley without saying Martin Donovan, her love ranneth over, and over and over. I was frequently caught in the undertow and lost count of how many times I saw their earliest collaborations juddering past on VHS.
So it was with a sense of nostalgia more than anything else that I clicked on the trailer for Donovan’s latest collaboration when I noticed it on iTunes the other night. What a great little number it turned out to be. Without wishing to spoil the treat for you, I’ll just say that Collaborator is by turns as hilarious and poignant an account of a hostage-taking as you’re likely to ever come across. I was amazed we’d not heard of it before now.
